Ballito Lifestyle Centre

Situated in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal's premier coastal holiday town, Lifestyle Centre provides upmarket shopping to affluent residents and holidaymakers. Evolution Architect's principal, Raewyn Hayhoe, was the project architect for the original Ballito Lifestyle Centre in 2001. In 2005 Brent Becker joined her on the project and the centre remains an active client today.

An office space should be an extraordinary area that is accessible, inviting and functional. For the Lifestyle Centre offices, our brief was to join two companies working under the same umbrella, but allow them to function separately. This was achieved by encouraging natural traffic flows and separation using office furniture combined with smart spaces. We gave particular attention to detail with the use of materials and texture, and general ergonomics of the office.
The existing space was completely gutted down to its basic shell and the team decided to use the exposed ceilings, influencing an industrial look and feeling that was gently maintained throughout the space. This premium office became a home away from home for the client and is a great balance between functional and striking.

Value Logistics is a comprehensive transport and logistics company that is able to provide a customised solution of both storage and transport. The Cato Ridge Value Logistics facility is home to a 150m x 242m warehouse that is capable of storing a vast range of product from electronic equipment to tyres. This enormous warehouse facility has the capacity to be fully racked should clients require. The building is highly visible from the N2.

Raewyn's first project after she qualified was a hospital while working for her first employer. During this time she gained invaluable experience. She and her team have gone on to work on Hospitals and healthcare buildings and facilities for the Department of Heath (DoH) and Department of Public Works (DoPW).

Evolution Architects' Principal Raewyn Hayhoe served on the design review committees for both Simbithi Eco Estate and Kindlewood Estate. She was appointed lead architect for Simbithi in 2005, setting the design guidelines for the entire estate while completing 7 major projects. This experience has uniquely qualified the practice for future estate projects.

The architecture of Simbithi Eco Estate responds to its environment. The use of timbers and natural stone is offset by glazed and stainless steel elements. It is a contemporary interpretation of the local farm style with simple, elegant and uncluttered detailing, clean lines and dominant roof forms.
